The S is for Sustainability program offers a number of sub-programs designed to promote informed actions that support more sustainable patterns of living, taking into consideration environmental, social, cultural and economic factors.
The various sub-programs on offer through the ‘S is for Sustainability’ program are suitable for different age groups as outlined below:
- Consumption – Let’s Audit it!
This sub-program highlights how we as individuals and part of a growing community can make a difference in regard to living more sustainably by making very simple changes to our everyday lives – from the products we purchase (i.e. choosing products that are durable, reusable, recyclable and not excessively packaged and by buying locally made products whenever possible) and by minimising the use of energy and water each day.
– Life Cycle Analysis (Years 5 – 10)
Involves making detailed examination and assessment of the manufacturing process of particular products to quantify how much energy and raw materials are used, how much solid waste, liquid waste and gaseous waste is generated at each stage of the product’s life.
– School/Home Energy Audit (Years 1 – 10)
Does your school have an existing energy reduction policy and program? EnviroEdu will assist your school to conduct an audit to monitor and improve its success, or alternatively the audit can be the start of a school energy reduction campaign! Students will be guided in the implementation of the audit – i.e. how to read an energy bill, how to convert consumption data into greenhouse gas emissions data and appliance energy usage and ratings. Students will be encouraged to form a series of recommendations and actions based on the audit of the school’s energy use and other information they gather during the audit.
- Reduce, Reuse, Recycle!
This sub-program offers three optional activities of which run for one hour and are suited to primary and early secondary school aged children (Foundation – Year 8):
– Implement a recycling program;
– Create a worm farm;
– Design and create a veggie garden.
These fun, interactive activities, are not only educational, but in a positive environment, allow children to become involved, roll up their sleeves and get their hands dirty!!! What better way to engage and inspire our younger generation to actively pursue a healthier more sustainable way of life.
- Habitat Gardens
Would you be excited at the thought of increasing the number and diversity of native species at your school? EnviroEdu can help you to create natural ‘microhabitats for a number of native species through:
– The building and installation of nest boxes in native trees; and
– Planting native trees and shrubs to improve habitat corridors between existing patches of native vegetation.
Watch the children’s excitement and passion grow as they monitor any changes to species numbers and diversity following active involvement to improve schoolyard habitats!
- Native Classroom Pets
EnviroEdu can assist schools in obtaining the ‘perfect native pet’ for a classroom by providing advice and assistance on the following:
– Recommendations on the most suitable species for the classroom;
– Obtaining the required State wildlife licences and permits;
– Diet, husbandry and maintenance requirements for the particular species;
– Follow up visits to ensure you and your classroom ‘pet’ are enjoying a happy and healthy friendship!
What a wonderful opportunity for a school/classroom to enjoy continued close contact and encounters with some of our amazing Australian critters! The ongoing learning activity potential is endless!
